Burning Regulations and Permits
The City of Bathurst has implemented regulations that govern campfires, open fires or the use of burning appliances within city boundaries. Burning permits can be obtained from the Bathurst Fire Department. See below what situations require burning permits and those not requiring burning permits:
OPEN FIRES, meaning fires lit to allowable combustibles that is not contained within a structure (outdoor fireplace), REQUIRE PERMITS.
OUTDOOR FIREPLACES are allowed, without a permit, in the City of Bathurst, subject to the following regulations:
- No person shall have more than one outdoor fireplace per property without authorization from the Bathurst Fire Department.
- The fireplace shall not be placed on a patio or a combustible platform.
- The fireplace shall be equipped with spark arrestors allowing no more than 12 mm openings, including the chimney.
- Only dry seasoned firewood that emits little or no smoke shall be used in the fireplace.
- There shall be no use of treated wood, painted wood, plastic, oil, any food materials, leaves, grass or other vegetation as combustible.
- The fireplace shall be installed on a non-combustible surface that shall extend at least 60 centimeters beyond the fireplace.
- The fireplace shall be located at a distance of at least:
- 3 metres from any main building;
- 6 metres from any main building on an adjacent property;
- 2 metres from any accessory building or structure;
- 3 metres from any hedge, tree, overhead wiring or other combustible material or a highway.
- A portable fire extinguisher or garden hose in good order must be readily available.
- No flammable liquids are to be used to ignite materials to be burned.
- Constant monitoring and control by an adult over the outdoor fireplace until the fire is completely extinguished.
- All embers must be extinguished with water when burning is complete.
- The door of the fireplace must always remain closed.

When a valid complaint is received regarding a campfire, the Bathurst Fire Department is authorized to order the immediate extinguishment of the fire.

HOW TO GET A PERMIT
Any person wishing to obtain a fire permit must apply to the Bathurst Fire Department.
