CITY TO ASSUME OWNERSHIP OF AQUATIC CENTRE

The City of Bathurst will become the new owner of the Bathurst Aquatic Centre in July, extending the lifespan of this crucial resource within the community. This decision will ensure the centre’s long-term sustainability. Through this opportunity, the Aquatic Centre will benefit from the City’s resources, rather than operate as a standalone facility. City departments will be able to support it, such as Treasury, Human Resources and, Public Works.

“We’re excited to take ownership of the Aquatic Centre, which has been a pillar of our community since 1983,” said Bathurst Mayor Kim Chamberlain. “This facility is an invaluable resource that ensures our residents can practice a healthy lifestyle, with generations of families having enjoyed its presence.”

The Aquatic Centre has been run by a commission of volunteers who dedicated their time to overseeing the facility. Their dedication to 40+ years of managing the center made it possible for many residents to enjoy activities year-round. The city thanks them for their service.

Over the last year, the Aquatic Centre faced an uncertain future. When this issue was brought to the City’s attention to avoid potential closure, all options were explored. By the city purchasing the facility, the Aquatics Centre will be able to remain open for years to come, with normal activities continuing as scheduled with minimal disruption.

Unfortunately, efforts to keep the Aquatic Centre open means the Kids Korner childcare sevice will not be able to continue operations at the facility, as childcare services do not fall within the City’s municipal mandate. While it was a difficult decision and sacrifice, the City of Bathurst will do its best to continue to work with the daycare and provincial partners who can work to ensure a transition for staff and families in the coming months.

With the City of Bathurst taking ownership of the Aquatic Centre, this guarantees that this community cornerstone will continue to serve families, athletes, and residents of all ages.
