Hydrant Maintenance
Hydrant Maintenance The City of Bathurst must maintain a total of approximately 750 fire hydrants which are a very important component in the maintenance of the City’s water system. In the interest of public safety, they must be kept operational and accessible at all times. Trees, shrubs or any other outside fixtures should not be any closer than a distance of one (1) meter from the hydrant, with an ideal minimum distance being two (2) meters. This would allow equipment to maneuver around the hydrants for cleaning purposes and give optimum visibility should an emergency occur. Hydrant flushing is also a necessary part of the City’s maintenance program. Fire hydrants will be flushed throughout the City. Residents in the areas where hydrant flushing is being carried out will probably experience discoloration of water. This problem is temporary and should clear in a short time. In our efforts to promote citizen participation and to beautify our community, citizens are encouraged to adopt-a-hydrant which is close to their property. This adoption would involve a few extra minutes of yard work and would compliment the general appearance of a citizen’s property. For more information on the “Adopt-a-Hydrant” program, please contact the Operational Services Department at 548-0444. We would like to thank you in advance for participating in this good neighbor project.
