  December 19, 2023

2024 will be a big year for road work in the City of Bathurst. Council approved the 2024 Budget totalling $49,976,122, $41,836,122 in operating funds and $8,140,000 in Capital funds. Both Operational and Capital budgets are, once again, balanced.

Two complete road rebuilds are on the slate for Ste Anne Street and Chaleur Street, these two projects alone accounting for $5.3 million in Capital investments. Roadway resurfacing will also be done, with $400,000 in Capital Funds invested on Basin Street, Riordon Drive, Foley Drive and Industrial Avenue, the latter three being in the Bathurst Industrial Park. The road patching and resurfacing budget will also increase from $80,000 to $210,000 in General Operational funds.

Water and Sewer Services will undergo a transformational change, with residential water services converting to a fixed rate system. The new rates will be implemented in the new year, with a baseline $825 annual fee for full Water and Sewer services that includes various discounts.

Other notable Capital investments include:

  • Water and Sewage upgrades and repairs, vehicle - $950,000
  • Splash Pad upgrade at Coronation Park (conditional on Federal and Provincial funding) - $500,000
  • Purchase of three Police vehicles - $230,000
  • Ice Plant controls and Sound system replacement for the K.C. Irving Regional Centre - $275,000
  • Various HVAC unit upgrades at Police Station, Public Works building and City Hall - $375,000
  • Structural replacements at Daly Point Nature Reserve - $50,000

Property Tax

Property Tax rates in the City’s old boundaries (Ward 1) maintained at $1.775. In the new boundaries (Ward 2), the rate for North Tetagouche residents increased to $0.8652, with residents in South Tetagouche, Ste Anne, Big River and Route 134 beyond Miramichi Avenue seeing an increase to $0.8420. The Ward 2 transitional increases are directly related to the Local Governance Reform process.
