Bathurst City Council approved the city’s budget for 2022. The City’s property tax rate will be maintained at $1.7750 for the sixth straight year. The budget will also include enhanced road reconstruction work and maintenance.

The 2022 General Operating Budget is $27,817,242 and the Utility Operating Budget is $7,515,476, totaling $35,332,718, an increase of over $2,6 million from the 2021 Budget.

Capital investments will include the purchase of three police vehicles, $200,000 in investments for Coronation Park, completion of the St. Peter Avenue Paving Overlay Program, road reconstruction on Evangeline and Princess Drives, Varrily Street, Stout Court and Gordon Avenue. There will also be a $155,000 increase for road repairs with an additional crew.

“The efficient financial management over the past few years is now paying dividends. The $1.2 surplus recorded in 2020 can be used in this budget cycle and will allow us to make capital purchases in cash instead of borrowing. That allows us to reduce future net debt, making our financial position even better. As we continue on an effective debt reduction path, that will pave the way for even more investments in the years to come. This is very positive news for our residents”, said Mayor Kim Chamberlain.

The City will also be dedicating $60,000 to conduct an efficiency study for the K.C. Irving Regional Centre and its operations, programming and funding opportunities.
