Bathurst Heritage Trust Commission inc.

\"Tradition, Transition, & Heritage\" -Incorporated 1989-

The Bathurst Heritage Trust Commission Inc. is a non-profit organization that exists to preserve the history and heritage of Bathurst and the Nepisiguit region and to protect that history, written and oral for the children of the generations to come. This is accomplished by maintaining records, photos, and artifacts which have been entrusted to the Commission in a small community heritage museum.
The Bathurst Heritage Trust Commission was established in 1988 upon resolution of the Bathurst City Council. From this resolution, evolved the following set of goals and objectives:

Long Term Goals

  • To establish a Heritage Museum for the City of Bathurst and the Nepisiguit-Chaleur region.
  • To recognize the need for preservation of historic structures, heritage buildings, and local history.
  • To develop and maintain a strategy to raise public awareness of local history and written heritage and the need for its preservation.
  • To establish and maintain a system of historical research pertaining to the area and its people.

Short Term Objectives

  • To place Heritage plaques on buildings that are 75 to 100 years old.
  • To publish brochures of Bathurst History and Heritage.
  • To conduct seminars, workshops, and teaching events about local history.
  • To place Heritage Photographs outdoors on display in strategic areas of the city.
  • To enhance the quality of information available to school children about local history and heritage.
  • To develop heritage tours of Bathurst and area.
  • To maintain liaison with the Nepisiguit Centennial Library where Heritage displays may be presented.
  • To maintain close contact with all groups with similar objectives.
  • To develop a public awareness strategy which includes keeping the Mayor and Council up to date on all Heritage developments - local, provincial, and national.

Accomplishments

  • The Old Post Office was proclaimed a Heritage Building in 1989 and was featured in the first Canadian Register of Heritage Properties in 1992.

    January 1st, 1994.
